My Experience with "Context Menu Platinum Unregistered Version" Adware

Friends,

I want to share my experience with the adware “Context Menu Platinum Unregistered version”.

Last week, I tried to open my Epson printer scan program. I right clicked on the icon and selected “Run as administrator”. There immediately appeared a box (image below). It has a countdown. Till it comes down to 0, I couldn’t close it. It just stays on the screen.

It says to register now, when I clicked on it, it took me to a website, which is not existing.
So apparently it was a virus, infecting my system.

I did the following to get rid of it.

1.      Searched for it in the programs and features, in an attempt to uninstall. But couldn’t find any related item.
2.      Deleted all my temporary files.
3.      Restrarted the computer.
4.      Did a full scan with windows defender.

The problem persisted.

Then I searched google for any related information. I learnt that the following programs are associated with the malware. File Minimizer, EmlOpenView 2.3, and MovieSubtitleSearcher. I didn’t have any of the above.

I then tried the following:

5.      Run Adwcleaner.
6.      Run Zemana antimalware
7.      Run Revo uninstaller.
8.      Run Special uninstaller.

All the above didn’t solve the problem.

At this point I decided to restore my laptop to a last best working time. I restored my system to a date one month back. I expected that the malware would have disappeared. But to my disappointment it still persisted.

Then I tried this software. “Adware Removal Tool by TSA”

I ran the tool. It scanned the system and cleaned the system. Out of many files it removed, the following, belonged to my criminal.

PUP.Search Manager ->> Folder ->> C:\Users\ADMIN\Appdata\Local\chromium\User Data\Default\Extensions\pilplloabdedfmialnfchjomjmpjcoej
Adware.Chromium ->> Folder ->> C:\Users\ADMIN\AppData\Local\chromium.

After the scan. I restarted the system. And Oila. The virus has disappeared.

I can’t guarantee that the same would work for everyone with the above problem. I advise you to first do a full scan with your antivirus, then uninstall the three programs mentioned earlier, if you have downloaded any recently. Also uninstall any suspicious program installed recently.
Then you can use the third party tools like the one I used. For me it worked. I am not sure, if it will work for others. But no harm in trying.  I hope this article would help you in dealing with this adware.

Please comment if it’s of use to any one.

PS. I have no financial interest in any of the softwares described in this blog.
